Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
All diagnostic and treatment methods in the extent of physiotherapy and rehabilitation medicine are applied in Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine by faculty members, instructors, being in the first place, and professional staff of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, using modern technologic equipments and systems. Our department is located in Hacettepe Adult Hospital; yet, it provides service to Hacettepe Adult Hospital, İhsan Doğramacı Children’s Hospital and Hacettepe Oncology Hospital which are within the structure of Hacettepe Hospitals. Our ambulatory care service is located in ground floor of Hacettepe Adult Hospital, diagnostic assessments (measurement and evaluation) and physical therapy are on floor A.
The areas of interest of our department are: painful musculoskeletal disorders, orthopedic, neurologic and rheumatic diseases and rehabilitation, rehabilitation of cardiorespiratory system diseases, pediatric rehabilitation, prosthesis – device applications, sports injuries and its rehabilitation, osteoporosis and geriatric rehabilitation. High-tech devices and systems are used by our measurement and evaluation unit which is part of our Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department. These are: isokinetic dynamometer system, bone density measurement device (calcaneal ultrasound ), electrophysiology laboratory (EMG), motion analysis laboratory, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation unit and superficial musculoskeletal ultrasonography. In our treatment unit: treatments with physical agents such as thermotherapy, cryotherapy, electrotherapy, hydrotherapy, phototherapy, fluidotherapy (fluid therapy), magnetotherapy and traction, manipulation, mecanotherapy methods and exercise therapies are applied.
Our Area of Interests
Pains related to musculoskeletal system: arthralgia (joint pain) such as neck pain, lumbar pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, elbow pain, hand pain, tarsal (ankle) pain.
Rheumatic Diseases: Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis
Rehabilitation of Neurological Diseases and Spasticity Treatment: Cerebral Palsy, palsy, spinal cord injuries, Multiple Sklerosis
Rehabilitation of Hand injuries: treatment for loss of hand and upper extremity functions after trauma or surgery
Geriatric Rehabilitation: Detection and Rehabilitation of musculoskeletal system problems related to aging
Lymphedema Treatment: Preventing and treating lymphedema after idiopathic or cancer surgery
Electroneuromyography (EMG) examination is composed of nerve conduction studies and needle EMG examinations. Nerve conduction study is made with low-voltage electricity by stimulating nerves and recording nerve activity over muscle. In Needle EMG examination, nerve and muscles are evaluated by pricking muscles.
Considerations before EMG …
• You do not need to fast before EMG
• If you have gone through EMG examination, it is important for you to bring old EMG reports
• Before step into the EMG laboratory, please take off your belongings such as ring, bracelet, watch etc…
• A clean skin is important and required for the test.
• If you have a dry skin, a few days before the EMG, curing you skin with crème or moisturizer is recommended. But, before stepping into the EMG laboratory, please do not cream or moisturize your skin.
• Before coming to your appointment, please make sure that your referral is still valid. In your appointment time, please come to Floor A – EMG Laboratory with your request paper checked by Reporting Secretariat and Pay Desk.
Results/Reports are received within the day after the test, starting at 2:30 p.m., from the Secretariat of Floor A.
Walking abnormalities being in the first place, Motion Analysis is a special test applied in the process of diagnosis and treatment of all movement disorders. Markers bandaged on to patient’s skin are recorded by seven cameras while patient walks, then 3D movements of those markers are analyzed.
Considerations before Motion Analysis …
• Bring a short or tight
• In your appointment day and time, please come to Floor A – Motion Analysis Laboratory with your request paper checked by the Reporting Secretariat and Pay Desk.
Results/Reports can be received from the Secretariat of Floor A at 2:30 p.m. after 3 to 5 working days of your test.
Isokinetic system is a computerized dynamometer used for testing strength of all body muscles and muscle groups or making exercise to increase muscle strength.
Considerations before Isokinetic Muscle Testing…
• If you have gone through Isokinetic Muscle Testing before, it is important for you to bring old reports
• It is important for you to put on clothes which make you move easy. Tight clothes are not suitable. If possible, arrive with a swimsuit on.
• In your appointment day and time, please come to Floor A – Isokinetic Muscle Testing Laboratory with your requisition checked by the Office of Official Letters and Pay Desk.
Results/Reports can be received from the Secretariat of Floor A at 2:30 p.m. the day after your test.
It is a system composed of ergonometric bike, walking band, and respiratory gases analyzer. Electrocardiography is recorded with electrodes attached to chest wall while the patient is pedaling or walking on the band, with the mask attached to the patient respiratory gases are analyzed and blood pressure is tracked with the cuff attached to the patients arm. The test is applied to both healthy person and the person who has cardiopulmonary problems to test/evaluate respiratory and circulatory performances as well as to determine exercise capacity.
Considerations before exercise test…
• Please do not eat anything in the three hours before your test.
• It is quite important for you to bring you patient file and a list containing drugs and dosage of drugs which you are using.
• It is important for you to put on clothes which make you move easy. Please wear a track suit, an undershirt and sports shoe. During the test your arms should be open.
• Male patients have to shave breast hairs.
• You may feel tired after the test (cycling or walking on band). For this reason, you should have made you plans for the trip back to home, if possible, have a company.
• In your appointment day and time, please come to Floor A – Cardiopulmonary System Evaluation Laboratory with your requisition checked by the Office of Official Letters and Pay Desk.
Results/Reports can be picked from the Secretariat of Floor A at 2:30 p.m. after 3 to 5 workdays of your examination date.
Physical Therapy is only given to patients prescribed a physical therapy program and considered necessary by our department’s doctors. Physical therapy and rehabilitation practices are composed treatments with physical agents such as hot-cold therapy, hydrotherapy, electricity, light, ultrasound, magnetic field therapies, exercises and work-occupational therapy. Some physiotherapy procedures cannot be applied to patients who has metal implants (metal pins and plates used in osteotomy), cardiac pacemaker and pregnant patients.
Policlinic Examination Appointments
Appointments can be booked by dialing 444 4 444 and / or via “Online Appointment” link.
Trainings are held on Fridays.
Patients born after 1996 may come without making an appointment, except Friday, after 10:00 a.m. and 02:00 p.m.
No appointments via telephone. You have to apply to Floor A – Secretary of Measurement and Evaluation Unit with your EMG requisition. Appointments are given two months after. Please bring your Hacettepe University Hospitals EMG Requisition paper and if you have, bring your official referral paper and/or health record to make an appointment. Your request paper, especially “Clinical Information” and “Doctor’s Name” parts, must be filled completely.
Motion Analysis Test Appointments
No appointments via telephone. You have to apply to Floor A – Secretary of Measurement and Evaluation Unit with your Motion Analysis Test requisition. Appointments are given two weeks after, at the latest. Please bring your Hacettepe University Hospitals Motion Analysis Test Request paper to make an appointment. Your request paper, especially “Clinical Information” and “Doctor’s Name” parts, must be filled completely.
Cardiopulmonary Evaluation Appointments
No appointments via telephone. You have to apply to Floor A – Secretary of Measurement and Evaluation Unit with your Cardiopulmonary Evaluation requisition. Appointments are given two weeks after, at the latest. Please bring your Hacettepe University Hospitals Cardiopulmonary Evaluation Request paper. Your request paper, especially “Clinical Information” and “Doctor’s Name” parts, must be filled completely.
Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Appointments
You should apply to the Secretariat of Floor A with the physical therapy and rehabilitation prescription given to you. Your application will be recorded down and your treatment will begin as soon as your turn comes in the earliest time available. You can learn the date and time of the starting of your treatment by calling secretariat of floor A on the date stated to you. Appointments are booked to 3 weeks later at the latest. You should apply secretariat of floor A at least 30 minutes before your official referral paper and/or health report, if available, while coming for treatment.
Our department is located on the ground floor of Hacettepe Adult Hospital. It is located directly on the left side upon entering from door no. 7. Department Secretariat is located directly upon entering into Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department.

Measurement and Assessment Unit and Treatment Unit
Our Measurement and Assessment Unit and Treatment Unit are located on floor A in Hacettepe Adult Hospital (1 floor below the ground floor). Upon entering from door no. 7, take the downstairs on the first left while walking towards the long main hallway of Hacettepe University. If you would like to take the elevator instead, it is located directly across the stairs (first elevator on the right while walking towards the long main hallway of Adult Hospital). Electroneuromyography laboratory (EMG), motion analysis laboratory, musculoskeletal system ultrasonography, calcaneal ultrasonography, isokinetic muscle testing unit and physical therapy unit are located here. Department secretariat is located directly at the entrance to the unit.
